The Siren of Death

The night was hanging over our head, A fear stopped her from going into bed, She thought I had crossed to the realm of the dead. She thought I was cheating on her With death, And she is not to blame for this, It's not a lack of trust As death has been sending love letters Ever since life crumbled from in between. She thought that I had gone out From the kitchen window through the backyard, In the midst of the night, And made love to the darkness that always tried to smother me, Though lately this darkness has been gently embracing me, For even it know how much hurt this mostly gentle heart can handle, And it's much less bites than it's been given to swallow. She thought I got married to this darkness And we would have offspring of grief That would visit my love in fading dreams Of my voice and of the thuds and crashes of my heart. I say to sweet girl That my heart still beats Where it used to before life Came to it's knees after such great beatings, My eyes still have a light though unquestionably dim, And there is an even bigger news I have for you. The simple statement I must make Is the one that with love you must take, I am known to go from light to dark Night to day from summer to a winter haze, All this change but I still know one thing, When the siren of death is trying to drag me down When I am already so low I will fight to stay afloat Because I am married to you not my darkness, She has not taken me And there has been no scandal or affair I am as yours as I was in the very beginning.

This poem is about suicide and the difficulty for the partner of someone battling with this reality. The persona reassures their lover that death has not yet taken them. Published date:
