Cowdenbeath Unpolished Jewel of Scotland
The first time I went to Scotland, was the first time in my life, I went to meet the relatives, of my future wife. Her Uncle Harry met us, standing at a large front door, With tartan carpet lade, upon the hallway on the floor. Uncle Harry said, “Mum this is Andy he’s English, but he’s alright! and fiancé of Elaine”, And at the cost of my national pride, my credibility went down the drain. “Do have ya want ya breakfast son”?” Seeing how I’m in Scotland Porridge please” I said, “Ach I suppose you wantin the sugar on an, not the salt instead”. I asked my future Dad, if there was anywhere to get a drink, Wee Jimmies would be open and would serve an English man, I think. So, togs on and wallet in hand and out the door we went, On Saturday night in Wee Jimmies bar till all our cash was spent. Now the Street with all the shops subsides, as well the locals know, ever since the old pit closed, the highstreets rather low. you used to see right down the street, and if you ever tried, to look today its sunk so low you can’t see the other side. B&M have shut their doors, because they wouldn’t open, The councils trying to put it right but remains the entrance broken. The football club has the same troubles, as the high street had before, It suffers damage from the pit, that was located right next door. The pitch goes downhill one side, causing the ball to roll, When the ball is placed upon the spot, it rolls into the goal. To make use of extra cash the football ground they switch, To Banger racing with a track, around the football pitch. The town is a survivor and has weathered every storm, From unemployment to subsidence and even if it’s looking warn. Wee Jimmies, The Glen or the Old Cross Guns, will welcome folk who go inside, To spend some time to drink a pint of Heavy, or whatever you decide. Don’t take the town on face value, it’s easy just to mock it, They will even welcome the English, (if) they’ve got some money in their pocket.
Cowdenbeath is my wife’s hometown and doesn’t deserve the bad press even if its slowly sinking. Published date:
