Train Journey
Train Journey - meaning Summary
Landscape as Intimate Body
During a nocturnal train journey the speaker wakes and conflates the Australian landscape with a beloved body. The poem treats dry trees and rocks as both physical terrain and living flesh, urging the land to break rock, draw dew and renew itself. Its register mixes erotic imagery and a visionary call for vitality, ending with a sudden transformation as trees seem to blossom more beautiful than the moon.

Clench down your strength, box-tree and ironbark. Break with your violent root the virgin rock. Draw from the flying dark its breath of dew till the unliving come to life in you. Be over the blind rock a skin of sense, under the barren height a slender dance... I woke and saw the dark small trees that burn suddenly into flowers more lovely that the white moon.
