Matsuo Basho

Autumn Moonlight

haiku serene

Autumn Moonlight - context Summary

Composed at the Rakushisha

Composed at the Rakushisha in 1691, Basho's haiku Autumn Moonlight appears in the Sarumino collection the same year. Written while he stayed at the Hut of the Fallen Persimmons in Saga, the residence of his disciple Mukai Kyorai, the poem reflects Basho's pared-down seasonal observation. Its spare image—moonlight and a chestnut penetrated by a worm—was produced within his mature practice of concise, nature-centered verse.
