Montgomery’s central claim is that poetic creation is a kind of miracle that only becomes lasting when it is contained. The thought begins as something fluid and hard to hold: it comes in rainbow dreams, mixed with immaterial sources like the wisdom of the sages. Yet the speaker’s admiration isn’t only for the dream itself; it’s for the act of making that dream stay. Poetry, here, is the moment when the fleeting turns durable.

Rainbow dreams and borrowed wisdom

The opening image makes the thought bright but unstable. A rainbow implies color and wonder, but also something you can’t touch. By blending it with the sages’ wisdom, the poem suggests inspiration isn’t purely private; it arrives already braided with tradition, learning, and inherited insight. The thought is also described as of spirit and of passion born, pairing two forces that can pull in different directions: spirit reaches upward and outward, while passion burns inwardly. He prisoned it: the necessary violence of form

The poem’s turn comes with a startling verb: He prisoned it. What began in freedom is locked into language. From captivity to endurance

The final couplet resolves the contradiction without denying it. Because the thought is imprisoned, now it gleams; it becomes A jewel shining through the ages. The jewel image matters: a jewel is valued precisely because it is cut, shaped, and set—made smaller than the raw material it came from, yet able to catch and throw light. Montgomery’s poem ultimately praises the poet’s craft as a trade-off: the cost is confinement, but the gain is radiance and time-resistance, a brightness that can outlive the original dream.
