A mock meditation that flips its own conclusion
Pound’s Meditatio sets up the voice of a calm, rational thinker and then quietly undercuts it. The speaker begins with scientific-sounding patience—carefully consider
—and announces a neat result: after observing the curious habits of dogs
, he is compelled to conclude
that man is the superior animal. But the poem’s real point arrives in the second half, where the same method—considering habits—produces not certainty but confusion. The poem becomes a small trap for human pride: the more honestly you look at people, the less the old ranking holds.
Dogs as the easy case: certainty built on a low bar
The first three lines parody the tone of a moral philosopher. Words like carefully
and compelled
suggest that the conclusion is unavoidable, as if the speaker has run an experiment. Yet the evidence is conspicuously missing: we never hear what the dogs actually do. That omission matters because it hints that the conclusion is less about dogs and more about the speaker’s expectation that humans should come out on top. The phrase curious habits
