Supposing I Dreamed This
Supposing I Dreamed This - meaning Summary
Yearning as a Wind
The poem imagines a lover as a house and the speaker as a wind that circles it in secret. In a dreamlike address, the speaker describes yearning, furtive surveillance, and a jealous tenderness that cannot penetrate the beloved's guarded interior. The dream permits hope—light or laughter might suddenly "flower" through the closed house—yet the wind remains an outsider, longing and prowling around the beloved without ever fully entering.
